BACK TO THE DOPE ASS BEGINNING

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but the Dope Ass Podcast is officially a thing! In the inaugural episode, I interviewed the coolest, hottest, most interesting person I know...myself.

I KID. Jokes aside, it was so fun to get to share a little more about me and my story through a totally new medium. But, if listening isn’t your thing or you’re forced to spend an inordinate amount of time on the Blue Line (hey fellow Chicagoans!) I’ve got the recap of my 17-minute, 15-second rant, right here, ready for you to consume in silence.

When I had my first kiddo at 27, I felt completely alone. All of my friends were still child-free and most of them weren’t even in serious relationships. I spent my entire day with Anna and by the time Jeff, my husband came home, I would literally attack him with conversation because I was so starved for adult human connection. This is when I knew that being a mom simply wasn’t going to be IT for me.

I started meeting with a life coach and eventually went back to school to receive my Masters in Spiritual Psychology, and that’s when things really took a turn. I understood my purpose and I wanted to share it with the world. Thus, Dope Ass Mom, the idea that motherhood wasn’t my identity, but rather just another thing that I did, was born.

As I built my platform, it began to take on many different shapes. Part of completing my degree included undertaking a project that aligned with my truest dreams. When speaking with a mentor, I dug deep my childhood dream of doing stand-up comedy. It was a profoundly emotional experience to tap into what I’ve always wanted to do. Especially as a recovering people pleaser, owning that my voice could be outrageous and opinionated and funny was liberating.

Soon, this comedic lens was blended with my love for fashion and suddenly words like “fashion blogger” and “Instagram influencer” were being tacked to my brand. While I’m not sure how much I identify with these terms, I don’t think it really matters what people call me. If my outfits inspire you to dress your best, that’s dope. If my McDonalds sponsored content gets you craving a Big Mac, that’s also dope. I’m just doing me and sharing it with the world.

Which isn’t to say that being an influencer isn’t without its challenges. It is a job after all. While some of my hardships might seem silly, like attempting to change in the backseat of a car without getting an indecent exposure ticket, or being barred from taking pictures at a dispensary (TRUE and WILD story), creating content is hard work. It takes creativity and thoughtfulness to deliver posts, blogs, and now, podcasts that I think will really resonate with and serve my audience.

And I’m not trying to turn this into a sob story — far from it. I’m just embracing my Dope Ass journey, work and place in this world.  Part of that is poking fun at my life and part of it is owning what I love and what I do. It’s all a part of the ride my friends, and I can’t wait to share even more with you! Stay tuned, cause shit’s really about to get Dope.
