AN ODE TO TACO BELL...UM I MEAN JOEL

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every MILF in Chicago is working out with Joel.

And no, I’m not just saying that because I’m fishing for compliments. His client base is intimidatingly beautiful, on the inside and out, and a lot of that is thanks to the work he pushes us to do.

When I first came to Joel, I was suffering from what he likes to call “Skinny Bitch Syndrome.” My good genes blessed me with the ability to eat like every day of the week was my birthday, without really seeing the effects, but I could FEEL them. I wasn’t toned, I wasn’t operating at my fullest potential and I definitely wasn’t healthy.

And while Joel was judging the two margaritas and quesadilla I was throwing back on the casual summer afternoon we met, he did not let on at the time. In fact, his open-minded approach to changing my relationship with eating and working out is what’s made working with him so transformative, empowering and fun.

In the interest of time, I’m going to give you the quick-and-dirty rundown of how Joel changes lives. First, he creates a plan that works for you. Mine happens to revolve around Taco Bell. Does it piss me off sometimes that other people are out there eating chocolate like it’s broccoli? Yes. But Joel reminds me that a Crunchwrap Supreme can be a part of my day-to-day life because of the other cuts I make, and that makes it all OK.

In fact, all the talk of mindfulness that he’s instilled in me has made a lot of things that would have pissed me off in the past seem OK.

Binge drinking is bad for your body, even if you haven’t had a sip of alcohol all week? OK with me.

Stressful evening with my kids calls for meditation and not handfuls of cheddar puffs? OK with me.

Swimming pools don’t need to automatically call for a glass of Rose in hand? OK with me.

What training with Joel has really helped me to do is listen to my body more than my emotions of stress, boredom or laziness. Of course, it can be tedious carrying the burden of heightened wisdom and self-control at all times, but the toned abs and ability to control my hanger definitely make it worth it.

And honestly, so does my relationship with Joel. He’s just a straight-up good time. Which I think is one of the most important traits in a health and wellness partner, because *real-talk* friends and family can be difficult and kind of judgy when you make a life change that is positive, but potentially not as fun (goodbye 2 a.m. Taco Bell runs, kind of).

So, shameless plug for his work, if you’re interested in starting a new journey with your body and how you treat it, I’d recommend a thousand times over meeting with Joel. But if you’re just looking for some inspo to get you started, tune into this week’s episode of The Dope Ass Podcast and he’ll get you hooked.
