CAULIFLOWER CRUST CAN SUCK IT
On this week’s episode of The Dope Ass Podcast, I’m sitting down with health, fitness, wellness and being-a-boss-ass-bitch expert, Kate Lemere to talk all things body image and motherhood.
Sexiest conversation in the world?
Maybe not.
Super important look into how to improve the ways in which we evaluate our wellness and self-worth?
Definitely.
So let’s start at the beginning, with two friends chilling in my closet, and Kate telling me all about her childhood career as a swimmer. With her glory days in the rearview mirror, Kate turned to fitness classes for structure and coaching in her daily routine. She got super into spin (and this was before SoulCycle, my friends!) and got her instructor certification. Fast forward to the start of her advertising career in Chicago, and Kate was just still super interested in fitness and not super loving her low-paying job.
In a serendipitous turn of events, Kate found Barry’s Bootcamp, and in her they found their Chicago marketing director. And while Barry’s branding is literally a case-study in Kate’s impeccable taste and strategic mind, her Instagram is where her true expertise and reliability shines through. Ever the humble gal, Kate credits her followers as the inspiration for the content, data, opinions and advice that she shares (she reads her DMs, y’all!) .
And these insights of hers are exactly what we dive into next. Perhaps my favorite insight she shares: Barry’s is, in fact, not just for super hot, super fit people. Which is a huge relief for all of us normies trying to get a dope workout in. In fact, according to Kate, everything wellness should be accessible to everyone, which is why she works so hard to debunk rumors like “cardio is the end all be all”, or “girls who lift will get bulky.” But recently, Kate’s work has really been centered around helping moms, like herself, understand and feel comfortable in their bodies.
Motivated by her own struggles with postpartum depression and pelvic floor dysfunction, both of which are serious medical matters which you should speak to specialists about if you’re experiencing, Kate homed in on listening to her body and turning toward cold, hard facts to achieve the look, but more importantly the life that she wanted. Her bottom line? Fitness is a journey that is geared towards finding fulfillment, confidence and happiness. There are healthy and unhealthy ways to go about doing so — and those ways look different for everyone.
Some of y’all may love numbers and find stepping on the scale empowering and educational, for others that kind of data can be all-consuming and counterproductive. You just gotta do what floats your boat, or at least that’s what Kate believes. She also believes in the power of eating what you want, when you want, all in moderation. For her that looks like saving room in her diet for a glass of wine each night, and for me that looks like never ever (I mean EVER) touch a cauliflower crust pizza in my life, full carb all the way, baby!
So all in all, fitness, in the eyes of an expert is simple, but not easy. Sure, motherhood may complicate things — like why TF does my body suddenly hate me?? or how has having a tiny human completely hindered my ability to hit the gym?? — but the right mentality is all you need to keep truckin’ along.
