How to Break into Comedy with Whitney Chitwood
Whitney Chitwood exploded onto the comedy scene with her iTunes number 1 debut, “The Bakery Case.” She’s here this week on Dope Ass Podcast to inject your week with some laughs and levity. Whitney and Andrea talk about their experiences doing stand up comedy and share a few laughs from Andrea’s recording studio (her home closet).
Sometimes you just need a second to shoot the shit with a friend. When that friend happens to be a hilarious, rising star in comedy, you know you’re in for a good time. On this week’s episode of Dope Ass Podcast, Whitney Chitwood joins Andrea in the recording closet for a hysterical conversation about breaking into comedy, strip clubs, and Instagram.
Things get a little more serious when Andrea and Whitney talk about separating yourself from your work when you’re in the public eye. Listen and laugh!

AND THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL...WORDS I COULD NOT TYPE IN AN EMAIL
On this week’s Dope Ass Podcast I got to talk with one of my dopest friends of all, in her own words, Chicago comedian/lesbian squirrel in a shoebox, Whitney Chitwood. I’ve had the honor of opening for one of Whitney’s shows this year and I was so stoked when she agreed to join me in my closet for the show!
The first thing you need to know about Whitney is she has experience living on a farm. In fact, she grew up on her grandfather’s farm in southern Illinois and while I myself, have never done that, I did grow up in Texas, which is basically the same thing. Although we did not completely exhaust all the farm or Texas jokes we could have possibly made, we did hop right into Whitney’s comedy career, which started in New York and has taken her to a whole slew of places. From L.A. back to Chicago’s Strip Joker (please, you have to click on the link) scene, Whitney has almost perfected the art of R-rated stand up — just ask her about South Bend.
But what she hasn’t totally perfected is being FAMOUS, now that her debut album, “The Bakery Case” has premiered as #1 on the iTunes and Amazon comedy charts! Sure, she is cool with the adoring fans she sees walking around Andersonville, but social media is a whole other ball game; for Whitney the comments are just too much to keep up with (she is GRATEFUL though, don’t get it twisted). Don’t worry, as the show’s certified Influencer, I assured her that I don’t even use Instagram the “correct” way. With all the complaints of Instagram being a highlight reel, I’m happy for mine to stay that way. I go online to see things that make me happy and inspired, not to hear about everyone’s problems, so I like to bring that same energy to my content.
The complexity of navigating social media is not the only thing Whitney and I see eye-to-eye on, however. We’ve reached the consensus that strip clubs are a great place to go if you’re ready to watch other people get lap dances. And while I’m looking for lessons and spare cash that previous patrons lost to couch cushions and Whit is watching with a different kind of admiration, I think it’s beautiful that we can both agree that strip clubs are fucking empowering places.
Speaking of NSFW topics, I got Whitney started on accidentally sending nudes to the wrong people by sharing a story of a girlfriend who sent her step-dad and NOT her boyfriend a text regarding his p*nis. Which BTW is the least sexy name for that body part, but I digress. Whitney herself has been known to send nudes to new friends instead of her boo-thangs, which certainly makes for an awkward start to platonic relationships, but being hilarious and witty as she is, she just rolls with it.
Moral of the story? Life takes you to some pretty crazy places, be that returning to your childhood farm after going broke in L.A. or dealing with the fallout of a NSFW text to the wrong number. But if you keep your sense of humor sharp and listen to my old MySpace cover song, the always good Taj Mahal by Corrina, it will all be more than okay.
